The regulatory process is also in flux. Some carriers are still in process of getting their 2014 rates approved. I expect that within this next week or so, we should have access to all rates and plans which will enable me to adequately advise clients on their options.
Regarding the Covered California health exchange plans, if your household income is less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Limit, you will qualify for Premium Assistance Tax Credits. These Credits can be significant and are higher for low income households which make the net cost of the insurance surprisingly affordable. On the other hand, if your household is over 400% ofFPL, your 2014 prices may increase significantly: many quotes are coming in +50% and even +100% of current rates.
Everybody that has an individual plan now will get a new plan on January 2014 that has similar benefits. However, your price will change. It will be worth shopping around to see what plan designs and pricing may work better for you.
I'm appointed with all the major health insurance carriers in California and can help answer questions about their plans.
